J. Cloyd Miller Library
WNMU’s library was established in 1893, at the same time as the Normal School. It was originally located on the 3rd floor of the Old Main Building on the Silver City campus. The current library building, located at the top of the 10th Street rise, was built in 1957 and renovated in 1975 & 1997. It is easily recognizable as the location of WNMU’s iconic bell tower.
Miller Library’s primary purpose is to serve the entirety of the Western New Mexico University community, including students and employees. The library uses the following priorities to guide our activities: 1) Enable the WNMU community’s access to high quality, diverse, and inclusive information resources in a variety of appropriate formats 2) Support the WNMU curriculum 3) Support student and faculty information and research needs.
Students can access Miller Library’s resources online or in person. The library features 120 online research databases that includes millions of scholarly, journal and news articles as well as thousands of streaming video and audio materials. Students also have access to over 250,000 ebooks and 185,00 print books through Miller Library. Patrons can use the interlibrary loan service to request materials unavailable at the library.
Research assistance is available throughout the library’s operating hours in-person, via chat, email or phone. Patrons can request assistance on an as-needed basis, or they can schedule an online or in-person videoconference with a reference librarian for help.
The library provides access to quiet study spaces, 2 meeting rooms, and a public forum area that can be reserved for events. Miller Library is a partial federal and state government documents depository, in addition to serving as a New Mexico Regional Review Center for k-12 Instructional Materials.
The ITRC Computer Lab is located on the first floor of the library. It provides desktop computers for student use, as well as printing services and study rooms. The Media Technology Services department is also located on the first floor of Miller Library. It provides short term loans of electronics to students and employees.
